Flounder fishing is great from Holden Beach west to state line

Flounder are providing most of the action in the Holden Beach area and south, although backwater anglers also are catching red drum and spotted seatrout.
“We’re catching a lot of flounder, and some nice ones, along with red drum and small trout,” said Capt. Keith Logan of Feedin’ Frenzy Charters at Holden Beach. “Flounder are definitely the hottest item right now. I don’t know, but everybody says it’s because we’ve had early warm weather. I know it’s unusual to have flounder as your hottest bite in early June.”
Logan’s best bait bets have been menhaden and mullet minnows, fished on Carolina rigs with 3/4-ounce barrel sinkers around deep holes and docks.
“We’ve have a couple of 7-pounders caught and a bunch of 4s and 5s,” said Logan (843-907-0064).
Flounder in the Intracoastal Waterway have been hitting mostly menhaden, while their cousins in the creeks seem to prefer finger mullet.
“We are catching flounder also around piers and docks in the residential canals (at Holden Beach), up and down the Lockwood Folly River and Shallotte River,” he said.
Red drum are hitting 4- to 6-inch-long mullet minnows at the same places.
“Most of the (spotted seatrout) are coming near Calabash, but they’re most 12 inches long or less; they won’t get bigger there,” Logan said, explaining that the area is heavily pressured by commercial netters. “The best chance to land a bigger trout is in Tubbs Inlet. We’ve caught some 4- and 5-pounders in that inlet.”Specks have been hitting finger mullet fished on Carolina rigs.
