J.O. Teel of Greenville is the grand-prize winner in North Carolina Sportsman's Bag-A-Buck contest. |
He entered his buck in North Carolina Sportsman’s Bag-A-Buck contest under the title “Happy Hunter, Happy Hunter.”
He was happy then, but boy, is he happy now, after his entry was drawn as the grand-prize winner for the 2012 contest. His prizes include a .223 Designated Marksman Rifle from Barnes Precision Machinery in Apex and an optics package from Leupold featuring a scope, binoculars and rangefinder. The prizes will be presented at the Dixie Deer Classic in Raleigh March 1-3.
“My hunting buddy, Howard Bullock, and I have been going on the (permit hunts), camping out for three days, for about eight years,” Teel said. “He’s hunted the land around there for 50 years, and he finagled me into going with him.
“I’m glad I did.”
Teel and Bullock have applied for and received permits for multiple hunts in the past; they were on the final day of 3-day hunt when Teel killed his big 10-pointer last November.
“I had seen some deer in this area two nights before, and I went back in there that Saturday,” he said. “I was in a climbing stand, and he came out at about 35 yards and I shot him with my Remington .270 and dropped him.”
