Lexington anglers win Komen benefit striper tournament
Limit just over 20 pounds is good for first place on High Rock
Chris (left) and Mike Myers of Lexington won the Dec. 14 Susan G. Komen cancer benefit at High Rock with two stripers weighing 20.50 pounds.
Mike and Chris Myers, both of Lexington, topped a rain-soaked field of 18 teams to win last Saturday’s Susan G. Komen Fishing for a Cure Striper Tournament on High Rock Lake held in conjunction with the Ole North State Line Siders.
The two anglers fished the main lake with live shad to take their two-fish tournament limit that totaled 20.50 pounds. Their catch was bolstered by the big fish of the day, an 11.60-pound striper. They received $799 and a Penn reel for first place and $330 for the big-fish award.
Asheboro’s Joe Garner took the second-place prize of $441 with a striper weighing 11.40 pounds. He also won $100 and an Echo blower for catching the biggest striper of the day that was released alive.
Josh Tuttle and Jesse Adkins, both of Lexington, reeled in a 10.70-pound striper to claim the third-place prize of $299.
Jimmy Davisson and Mac Moneta of Charlotte placed fourth with a 10.60 pound striper.
The 18 teams composed of 30 fishermen took off in the morning amidst a steady drizzle and cold temperatures, many thankful that their boats were equipped with Bimini tops, as the weather gradually worsened. By 12:30 p.m., heavy rains pounded High Rock, persisting through the 3 p.m. weigh-in.
The fish were turned off by the weather as well. Fewer than 10 stripers came to the scales, though they were all quality fish, ranging from eight to 11 pounds. Most were taken with bucktails or live bait at the creek mouths or from the main body.
The benefit tournament raised $833 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in support of the organization’s fight against cancer.
