Turkey Hunting in North Carolina

Turkey Hunting?

I plan on making a run at my first Turkey this year and I plan to do it with my bow!! Soooo...I was wondering what I need to do to get ready for Turkey season. Do you scout them like deer and if so how? I know I have some back on the property I hunt deer because I have seen them but I don't know where to even start as far as preparing for a turkey hunt. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Tukey with a Bow

If are in for a great challenge but with the right equipment and paying attention to details it can be done!! Lol. I bagged my first turkey with a bow this past season with a bow and filmed it all by myself. Where I hunted that day was about a 50 acre hay filled the was surrounded by wood on 3 sides and a big creek bottom on the other. The hay was tall in most of the field except for one area that did not grow up. When I first located this spot I could see were hundreds of turkey tracks. From that point on right up to the season opener I would take a climbing tree stand there to get up where I could see over the hay and observe from a distance. It was definitely a hotspot. There was a least one big tom in that spot about every evening the week prior to opening day. I took my Primos Vision Ground blind in and sat it up right on the edge of the bare spot a couple days before the opener. It is not really brushed in but turkeys don't mind the change in scenery as much as a deer does. Anyway, I had already been practicing with my bow sitting in a chair in my blind and with tripod with video camera. I tried to make a little motion as possible and as little noise as possible. I knew the birds would be close so those are very important tips. You do not have to have a ground blind to be successful but if I could use one then it will definitely not hurt. My tom came directly in front of me from about 60 yards and I was able to get my bow off the hanger, adjust camera, draw and shoot all while being directly in from of me. He got to 7 YDS! and never knew I was there. Again, you don't have to have ground blind but I sure do think it helps. Sorry for the long post!!

Just remember to practice, practice, practice being as quiet and motionless as possible. Pick your times to move and draw. With the right scouting, practicing, and a little luck on your side you might just pull it off!! I will attach a couple of my pics. Hope this helps!!

GT...I will take you with me any time!! lol I learn much more through experience and experiences shared by the more experienced lol. Duplin, I have a Primos Vision blind also that I got on sale the week after christmas for $100 off the normal $230 price for taking my brother and friends etc. So I am set for Turkey season now as well. I am confident in my shooting seeing I stuck a squirrel from 20 yards from my blind last week lol.

Help

Guys i will answer any questions i can and help any way i can...I learned alot through mistakes myself. I love to talk Turkey so don't be shy lol. Avidarcher...Man you are jumping in feet first to try and take a Wise Ol'Gobbler with a Bow and i wish you luck. If i was you i would start trying to use a mouth Call if you can't already. If it's your first time, start with a call thats single or double reed to get used to it. Just carry it in your mouth while driving around and get used to it without slobbering and then you can start making sounds because alot of times you are not able to move a muscle those last few yards to use a Box or Friction (Glass/Slate/Copper etc) Call, even with a GUN!!!. You will find that Turkeys can see like you wouldn't believe and i have learned that IF a Turkey could smell...You would never kill one LOL...Guys When we Turkey Hunt, We are trying to reverse Nature because Gobblers Gobble to attract the hens and when we call like a Hen we are trying to reverse Mother Nature AND ITS NOT EASY. Some days you will start questioning your sanity LOL. I am a firm believer that Turkey hunting will MAKE you or BREAK you as a Hunter but when you do close the deal....Man!!!What a Rush!!! It involves a lot of will and determination in order to take a bird by outsmarting it. In the early season Gobblers are HENNED up and hard to call, If you have 1 fired up on a limb and he goes quiet when he hits the ground, It means hes using all his time Strutting for the ladies and has all he needs at the moment, He will still give you a courtesy Gobble when you call but hes just saying 'Yeah, i hear you, the Party's over here, come along' but he wont leave a real thing for 1 in the bush. NOW...Once the hens start nesting, its a different game. About 9am or so depending on the weather, The hens will go to their nest and leave the Gobbler(s) alone. Its at this time that when you decide to call....You better be set-up because i have had them come running in silent and catch me standing there looking Stupid LOL...Again, I learned the Hard way...The Text-Book hunt is...You Roost him the night before with a Owl Call, Slip out in total darkness, Slip back in Total Darkness and set up NO closer than 100 yards, Wait for him to sound off at Pink light, Do a Few LIGHT tree Yelps, When he Gobbles and cuts your calling off, go quiet...He knows where your at, Wait till he flies down (You'll be able to tell hes on the ground when he Gobbles) Give him 3 excited cutts and a few yelps, He should cut you off and if he does...get Ready and aim your Weapon toward him and be patient VERY patient. If he Gobbles again and it sounds like hes farther away, then his Girlfriends are leading him away from their competition, then you have LOST this one, Go look for another bird and come back around 10 to see if hes alone. A gobbler will usually come in quiet the last 40 yards or so (Its not like they show on TV LOL) Plus.. I never hunt without Decoys and I always have my decoys facing me so the Gobbler will be close trying to make eye contact with the Fake hens and if you use a Jake decoy in your mix...Aim your weapon at the Jake because 95% of the time the Gobbler will approach the Jake first to show him whos Boss. Turkeys are tough so you have to shoot them in the head and break their neck and BOWHUNTERS have a small target also (Right above the legs where they meet the Body is the Sweet Spot) Because everyone has seen the Turkey on the Table and they are 90% meat and you have to get the arrow where it counts or the bird will fly off and die a slow death. You can hold the whole insides of a Gobbler in 1 big hand after you clean them...About the size of a soft-ball...Its amazing. Oh yeah...If multiple Gobblers approach your set-up...Take the One thats strutting because hes The man of that Flock.......Good Luck

WOW...Got carried away and Duplin was apolizing for his long post LOL

Turkey with a bow

I admire you for wanting to turkey hunt with a bow. I myself love to turkey hunt with a bow. There is no greater rush. I have taken 6 turkeys with a bow. Two of those being NC state records in the NWTF book. All six are in the top ten in the state. Having shot some from a blind and some without a blind I can say it is very challenging without a blind. You have to wait for the turkey to go behind a tree to draw or wait for him to strut with his fan in between you and him. It is awesome doing it without a blind. However there is very little challenge in my opinion shooting a bird from a blind. Turkeys are not afraid of blinds like deer are. The only challenge from a blind is hitting your target. There is no challenge in drawing the bow back. I wish you luck.

So some more questions?

So Roost them with a Owl call?? First I have to find them!! lol I hunt about a eighty acre piece and its pretty much all woods. Now I know a lot of people who will hunt open areas for Turkey so what does that say for me?? What's the best way to scout and locate them and where they're roosting?? Also when is the best time to do this? Now? a Week before Spring? The day before I hunt? Like I said I have no clue when it comes to Turkey. Sorry for all the questions but I am sure I have more to come lol. Thanks guys!!

Turkey Hunting

I have read these post for years now and never have posted until now. I was lucky enough to take my first turkey sitting between my daddy's legs at the age of 8, and won the NC state calling contest at 12, so I feel like Im able to share a little about the great sport of turkey hunting. I have hunted Turkeys in over 10 states and been lucky enough to harvest quite a few over the last 27 years and other people are right, turkey hunting gets in your blood like no other, it will drive you wild, but there is no greater reward then to locate, sit up and call in a old gobbler on a cool April morning. I have never used a decoy, kinda think thats cheating a lil bit, but I dont have problem If someone chooses to, but the main thing I can tell a rookie is to not get caught up in just 'killing' ..thats not what turkey hunting is about, its about so much more then finding a spot with lots of tracks in field and sitting up a blind and going about it like we do deer hunting. Yes you will kill plenty of turkeys this way, but do it the right way, Hoot at day light, if you couldn't roost him the night before, locate him, sit up way futher then you think....he can hear you dont worry, call a lot less then you think you should, and MAYBE he will decide you are worth a look....maybe. One good turkey hunt with a gobbler really getting worked up answer your call and you will be hooked. Good luck and its the best rush I have ever gotten in the woods, I have taken Elk, Mule deer, And whitetail, NONE can come close to A good turkey hunt. Sorry could talk turkey all day, just please do your self a favor and learn the 'right'

way to do it.

WELCOME

WELCOME MPB to the site and congrats on your contest wins. Were they with a mouth call or other? I have taken most of my Turkeys with a mouth call and have called up several others for first timers and friends. Your 100% correct, Its not like it is on T.V. lol

Ask Away

Avidarcher, I use my mouth to do the barred Owl call of 'Who cooks for you--who cooks for you allll' and will sometimes do the 'laugh' also and MPB brought up some good notes also. He's right...You will take 'Something' from every Turkey Hunt home with ya, even if it isn't a pile of limp feathers...There's just something about Turkey Hunting that burns in ya...Watching the world wake up on Spring mornings is something only a Turkey hunter can truly describe and hearing that first Gobble of the season...Priceless. I am Always looking for Turkeys but i get serious about the middle of Feb. and look for 'hang-outs'. Turkeys like fields so they can strut and Show-off for the ladies but i have took just as many in the woods but only in woods that are fairly open. I think they shy away from the thick stuff because its easy for a predator to jump out and get them (like me lol). And if its raining like it usually is in the spring Turkeys will Flock to a feild because they cant trust their hearing in the woods with all the Rain noise. Also 90% of the time you CAN'T call a Turkey down hill or through a fence, ETC....Its just that way, I have seen Gobblers hang-up because there was a log on the ground and they wouldn't go over or around it???Don't ask me...Again, Its just that way lol. And another thing about Decoys...I have had them work BUT i have also had them spook Birds away...And Like MPB said..When you think you are Not calling Enough...CALL LESS. If a Gobbler thinks you want him that bad with alot of calling he will Hang-up and expect you to come to him...Again, Thats the way it really works in Nature. Check his Tempature and see how hot he is.If he Gobbles and cuts your calling off....Go silent,Hes coming. I have messed with the same Gobbler for days before i won the battle but like i said, You will loose alot of Battles with a Wise Ol' Gobbler. Starting out with a Bow is a BIG step in Turkey hunting and i wish you luck....If you can locate the Roost tree, thats a big advantage, It will have alot of Scat under it and i have found that Turkeys will Roost above water when they have the chance, Again..Don't ask me why, It's just that way LOL. If you can't get the owl call with your mouth then H.S. Struts 'Palmers Hoot Tube' is the call i perfer. I have heard Turkeys answer Crows but never my Crow call LOL so now i just walk a little and listen ALOT to the real ones. They will Gobble at a Coyote Howl also but usually just once out of shock because they know Coyotes are Predators. Any Loud noise in the spring woods will get a love struck Turkey to gobble...Even a shotgun blast that missed its mark LOL. When the season gets Closer I'll ride over if you want and we can check things out...Need to get some arrows fletched anyway at S&S

Turkey hunting

I use all kind of calls, 90% of the time a mouth call, but I always have a box, and a couple slate calls handy. Ive had the joy of hunting with a 70 plus year old friend of ours that has more hunting stories then you can count, and he has never used a thing but a old Lynch box. He has taken plenty of birds with that old call. So the best call is one that you can 'make talk'

MPB What is your favorite Mouth call? My Go-To call is a Cutt.N 2.5 from H.S.Strut. A box call is 1 call i hardly ever use but i got a H.S. Strut 'Ol Mama Hen' and a New Primos Box Cutter that i like because i can Cutt on it Pretty Good. I have a Custom Made Slate and Glass Call that sound awesome but like you said...Its got to Talk the Talk...Here's a pic of my Daughter and Turkey Hunting Buddy

Got That Beat LOL

RockHunt...I have a Cane Creek Box thats Pretty sounding...Story for ya...Now don't laugh lol but year before last My brother killed a Gobbler at first light and called me and asked if i was doing any good and i said No and he said meet me at the house and we will come back up here because i had 3 Gobbling so i meet him and we took care of his bird and then we drove back to his area and he had to walk me through his hunt lol and then i asked.'Where were those other 2 gobbling at?' So we walked up on this knoll and he said 'Hit'Em' I cutt a few times and a Gobbler Cut me off so we flopped down right there and he Gobbled again and was coming fast...I called him over 200 yards across a field and right to us at 20 yards and he said 'You got him?' I said 'Yep'...He said 'Take Him'.....Then...'Click' OH NO....I forgot to load my gun in all the excitement and he will never let me forget it LOL....I was sick at first and then we just sat there and laughed uncontrollable LOL He said my shoulders looked 2 foot wide and when that gun clicked it was like the air went out of me LOL...He (Gobbler) seen me trying to get a shell in it and was gone...Man they can see LOL

calls

Gobblintom, I have been using a primos piggy back for the last 10 years or so, Will Primos actully gave me one to try at one of the nwtf conventions and Ive been using one ever since. I use true triple or the true double II most of the time. I hunt out of state a lot so that means all day in the woods and these calls can be kept in your mouth for long periods and still sound the same, they aint cheap but the out last other calls ive tried 3 to 1. I had the same box for lots of years but this past spring it got soaked one morning and just dont have the same sound...I have about 10 or more boxes that dont have that sound come to think of it, so Im trying to get one tuned up before April the 1st. Also If your into history check out Wayne Bailys book on Turkey hunting. Wayne was a pioneer for the NWTF and a heck of a hunter, his book well worth a read.

Oh the fun...

I love when everyone basically tells me that I am crazy for going for my first Turkey with a bow, I really do love it lol. Im one of those guys that's always up for the challenge. Just started Deer hunting this year and with a bow and I had people tell me I was crazy then but hey when I downed my first deer(Ok 6 pointer) it couldn't have been any sweeter. From the stories I have heard about Turkey I can only imagine the reward when I do get that shot off =)

Thank You guys for the pointers! So when you go out with the owl call, the goal is to Whoot and listen to locate where they're roosted that evening correct?

Guys

Avidarcher/MPB...Avid Man i hope you can pull it off but even if you dont get a Turkey, I promoise if you come close you will be Hooked For Life.

MPB...Yes I've read some of his Stuff. He was a Native of my home state Of West Virginia and alot of the NWTF is because of him...I remember when he passed away i was telling some Co-workers that Turkey hunt and i was the only guy you knew of him...I was Shocked LOL.....I have used a Piggy Back before with good results, Did Will Primos tell you that it was 1 of his First calls he prototyped but never took Off like it later did? And your right they are not cheap and not for beginners LOL....I'm sure you have meet Rob Keck as well....The NWTF isn't the same without him in my opinion even though he came off as snobby, I bet hes a great Guy.

Rockhunt...Yeah i have dragged my share in the snow and even uphill....1 Deer....3 drags uphill LOL

Rob Keck

Gobblintom.. I meet rob in 1984 at one of NC first NWTF conventions, he sighed a nwtf knife for me and was a super nice down to earth ole country boy who loved to hunt. I hate the way the commercialazation of our sport changed the way he acted. Sometimes getting so big has its down side i guess? I was just a kid then and really looked up to him, but I guess Money changes a lot of people. The old fellow I was telling you about Yesterday used to hunt with Wayne in WV and some of the tales he would tell about Him and Wayne waaaaayyyyy back in the day are priceless. Like when Waynes Teeth froze in the tent one night in early spring. Good thing he want using a mouth call I guess HUh???

Avid.. yes thats the goal, If you can roost him the night before you are way ahead of the game. You can get in WAY before daylight and get set up that way. If not then hoot at daylight and hope he is roosted where you know the area so you can get on him. Dont forget a crow call is a must after daylight. If you do get one to gobble later on in the morning with a crow call there is a good chance he will work....maybe

Rob & Wayne

Wow thats Cool you meet him, I have heard other people say he changed when he got fame and that is sad. I would still like to share a tree with him 1 day. I would have loved to hunt with Wayne also in WVa. I still try to go back each year to WVa to chase Turkeys but you have to be out of the woods around mid-day and you cant hunt evenings like we can here in NC but after our season ends they still have a week or so so i try to go up each year but that rugged terrain will work on my legs now lol. Wow i was 14 when you meet Rob, I bet you have some tales also. Believe it or not, I didn't really get into Turkey Hunting until NC got a season but had took a few early with my Grand pa in WVa.....I would Rather Turkey Hunt than anything....It just fuels my Fire

Hey MBP, Have you ever used the stacked frame calls by HS Strut? I really like the Eddie Salter 'BAD BOY' and 'BAD BOY 2' mouth calls. I remember you said you liked the 'Stacked' calls and thought i would ask. The ones i bought have the Green frame but i have seen the BAD BOYs with the white frame also.

GT, I have not tried any new calls in several years, I guess its that ole if aint broke dont fix it thing, but I'll take your word on it and Ill find one and give it a try. I used a quaker boy old boss hen before i switched to the Primos calls but they just didnt last near as long, so I have never gave any other brand a try, but I think I will try your kind and see. Thanks and I didnt win bid on your vest but it was worth a shot.

Well good luck MBP on the Boss Gobbler, I have only killed 1 Gobbler that had long spurs and 1 of them was broke off so i made me a necklace out of the other 1 and it was 1.5 inches long, but i have killed some thick bearded Gobblers, with my thickest being a double bearded bird and thats the only multi-bearded bird I have killed. My brother killed 1 with 3 beards that were HUGE but the Gobbler only weighed 16-lbs lol I tolded him that it had 6-lbs worth of beards on it lol. I love it when those crazy 2 year olds come running in so thats probably why i haven't killed many Boss birds LOL... I'll share some pics of the necklaces i have made.
