OK members......I've seen a post with a Turkey fan mount that included body feathers and wing feathers. I know it might be premature but, if I get a nice tom this year I would like to do that mount. If you have that picture please post it. If you don't then I'll have to go 'full monty' and get what I'd really like the flying turkey like 'wild Turkey Whiskey'.....lol!
Well I went out to pattern my Remington 870 Express with a Carlson Extended Turkey Choke in it.
I was shooting Winchester Supreme High Velocity Turkey Loads 3 inch, 1 3/4 oz. @ 1300 fps.
Yes I got my nose busted Diane00. I don't know what it is with this gun but everytime I pull that trigger, bam right in the nose. Must be that choke. At least I'm not shy to it anymore.....I know it's gonna.... Read More
I hope all the youth are having a good time today. A few have taken birds that I know of. Waiting to hear from everyone else and wishing I was under age 15 again....lol!
I can't wait for big boy and girl season to open next week. I've been messing around in the yard trying to get my pattern down...he he!
I dailed the bow down for a couple of weeks because of a shoulder injury but couldn't.... Read More
Well after 7 long years shooting the same Hoyt Bow, I have decided to buy another one. The Ben Pearson Stealth II. It has an IBO of 340 with an unforgiving brace height of 6 1/4.
Ben Pearson Archery is the oldest family owned bow manufacturers. Not the biggest company but Christain Based building one bow at a time.
Ben Pearson shooters walked away from the Dixie Deer Classic 3D shoot.... Read More
Good Morning Members.....lots of folks have already been to the Dixie Deer Classic. I'm getting prepared to head that way this morning.
I know Gobblintom, Duplin County Bowhunter, Limbhanger and a few others will be there today. Let's meet up at the North Carolina Sportsman's booth around Noon! See ya there!
Well folks here is another new product for archery hunters on the market. I haven't checked into the price but I'm sure it's not cheap!
The only problem I see with it is arrow drag. It weighs 38 grains which a guesstimate would slow the arrow 15-20 feet per second. You would also need one on your arrow for practice because it will change your sight tape and or pins setting.
Now is the easiest time to clear trails for the new season. Scout those trails and look for the freshest rubs that bucks will make late season in staging grounds to give you clues on Bow season stands you might want to get in place.
With antlers starting to hit the ground with the shedding. Bucks will start to need those minerals and protiens.... Read More
Have you ever gone back to read the harvest report from the year before? Very interesting with lots of numbers to crunch.
I researched a few things and here's a break down from last year.
N.C. Whitetail Deer Population: 1.25 million
Total Harvest: 173,553 (14% of the population)
Road kills not included in report.
Roughly 60% of the population are Doe that will bare an average of 2 fawn.... Read More
I've been working hard lately and have not had much time to spend in the tree, so when a good friend asked if I would like to bow hunt with him Sunday, it didn't take long to say yes!
I was looking at the move times on my GPS and with the Moon just over the Full Moon cycle, not only were the move times not favorable but, the move forecast even said, 'Poor.... Read More
Today I called off working in the rain and decided to hunt in the rain in the ground blind. I was in the ground blind about 30 minutes when a dog starts barking coming my way. Out pops a doe running straight at my blind from about 200 yards away. She gets within 100 yards and see's the blind and hooks it for the woods. I shot and missed. Well I found a little white hair and no blood and looked.... Read More
Well with the Hurricane past and things settling down. I decided it was time for some more meat. I just put the sausage stuffer away after processing 70 pounds of meat over the week-end.
I have been hunting my honey hole a 420 yard by 225 yard isolated disked under corn field. I haven't seen a thing in over a week but, every night I would see these same 3 does going to bed down in a grassy.... Read More
Well here it is Guys and Gals....the hunter's moon. This is the moon that is suposed to set the rut off. Short days and a full moon. I always heard that the hunters moon was the second full moon to occur in November however that doesn't happen every year and this would be closer to the first full moon in November.
Well it's late but I just finished grinding up 6 hams and 4 back straps. Total weight 40.9 pounds with 28 pounds of Boston butt to grid tomorrow. I bought some pepperoni snack sticks mix that makes 20 pounds so it looks like 48.9 pounds are going to be burger and sausage.
100 dollars into a grinder and another 100 into a sausage stuffer, a good cutting board and a Sharp knife and your set for.... Read More
Wow....what a beautiful day on the tree.
I got in before sun up and took this picture as the sun broke the horizon.
Later my little buddy came by to say hi. He's only 7 feet away and like a good boy never barked or gave me away. You can tell how high off the ground we are by the size of my truck tire tracks below in the disked corn field.
No deer sightings but, I'll be on the tree again.... Read More
Let me start this post by giving my condolences to Creek07 for the lost of a very dear family member this past Wednesday. Creek had planed a hunt for the guys that had to be postponed because of a family member wedding, which tragically ending up being over shadowed by a sudden death. Creek....you are in our prayers.
The hunt was to be this past weekend and I.... Read More
Well got another couple of packs of venison in the freezer yesterday.....stocking up!
Watched a doe, from a box blind stand, walk right to me from about 250 yards away. I had hung an estrus scent bomb out near the corn pile knowing there were a few bucks in the area. She had come out a 5:45pm which was way early according to the move times.
I had gone to some friends club to hang some.... Read More
Gun Season already? I just got my bow dialed back in good and down here in the southeast......yep Gun Season opens on Saturday.
IMO there is nothing more rewarding than a harvest with a bow. To me, and don't get me wrong, I like my .270 WSM and that cannon like bark, but when I break it out it's strickly meat hunting.
Just went out and checked it out to make sure it was on and it's.... Read More
All I can say is 3rd Times A Charm. I have been so frustrated thus far this season. 2 well hit does with no recovery. One opening week end and the other last Monday.
Everyone has been saying get the Rage broadheads but, I have defended the fixed broadhead on many ocasions. It's been said that a properly placed shot with any broadhead will kill any deer. Not always the case.....or maybe kill.... Read More
For the most part, hunting and the outdoors has mostly been recognized as a 'Man's Sport'. I have been on this site since 2004 and became a member in 2005.
Through the years I have slowly seen women entering this sport through the field and streams of this great state. In the past 2 years women have not only participated but have become major contenders, knocking down down record deer and.... Read More
Ok....here it is! I have had the best season as far as sightings go. I have had 15 deer at one time within 80 yards of me and 3 and 4 deer under me at 28 yards. Any bow hunters dream. The only problem has been the bucks are to small or the does are to far out or the ones under me are too young!
Work has kept me from my normal scouting in early season, practicing shooting the bow, clear out.... Read More
