After a long couple weeks and plenty of close calls I finally got another bird on the ground. Went to a spot I had hunted a few weeks ago and knew there were birds in the area. Got set up in the ground blind with my son around 540am. Nothing answered the owl hoots but the first crow flew over and he sounded off about 80yds away in some tall pines on the edge of the field. I waited a few minutes.... Read More
Put 3 toms and 3 jakes to bed last night, this morning a buddy and I sat up where I have been seeing them cross out of the field. By 9 o'clock had this bird on the ground. ill give a play by play later, unfortunately I'm gonna have to write a small book. It was an action packed morning.
Well we started out this morning about 9 am with not much luck. We sat for an hour and decided to go back to the house because it was really windy. After taking a lunch break and hangin out for a while my son and I headed back out to the field. We set up around 345 and I put out my jake and feeding hen decoy. After a few yelps and some soft purrs about every 15 minutes on the friction call three.... Read More
these 3 have been visiting regularly, unfotunately they logged a big chunk of woods right up to the field edge and now they are gone. im guessing they have just moved off because of all the noise and hope they will return in a week or so.
last year i tried out my feeder hen and had 2 hens and 2 toms come up and feed right next to her. sothis year i figured id add the jake to the mix. hopefully they work out for me again. they arent the cheapest things out there but worth the money... my hen survived a week in the woods in VA. when i went back to get her she was knocked down the hill but still inflated.
got off work early on friday and decided to go get up a tree for a few hours. i went to a random ridge i found turkey hunting and slipped up a tree around 1030am. after spraying a couple shots of a buck bomb out and hitting the bleat can followed by some tending grunts this nice 8 slipped down the ridge and crossed the creek at 40yds. i put the cross hairs right at the base of his neck and.... Well i had a great 2 day hunt in VA for the opener of turkey and deer season. First morning i saw some hens and as the circled around my set up i look up and saw a nice 7pt. opted to pass because he was a young deer. Later that evening i set up between to ridges and did a fighting purr about 4pm... i look up a few minutes later and here came 3 hens and 2 toms in toe behind them. i let the hens.... Read More
Well i had a great day last saturday. I got to take my son to the woods with me and spend time with my father as well. the morning was slow and rainy, only saw a fawn and a hen. around noon the rain broke and i decided we would get in the stand early. walking to the stand with a my son i spot a doe on the feeder 200 yds away. surprisingly when i crouched down he followed my lead and she had no.... got some deer coming into my ground blind but the rabbits are eating all the corn and the coyotes and bobcats are eating the rabbits.... guss thats survival of the fittest
Well yesterday morning was uneventfull. only saw one nice buck cross at 65yd and couldnt see my pins yet. so this morning i figured i would sneak back in there where he crossed and try to get on him. right at day light i was greeted by a bear crashing through the woods. shortly after that around 7AM a doe and young spike worked there way through the thicket. i readied myself and drew back only.... Took my 4yr old son with me on a day and a half turkey hunt(his first). it proved very challenging and he was a bit loud in the blind. after 2 uneventfull hunts and a quiet morning i decided we were gonna sit in a deer stand close to where i knew turkeys regularly used. on our walk in we spooked a big tom that was already infront of the stand. thinking it was over with we set up anyway in the.... anyone else on here from towards the coast noticing the birds acting a bit weird this year? ive put over 30 hours in the blind and havent had alot of response or action yet. i called in some jakes saturday afternoon and they were henned up so im wondering if its just that lull in the season where all the birds are constantly with hens. i know they still seperate from the toms to nest during the.... Killed this Tom on Saturday afternoon. It was probably 35mph winds and cold so i figured i would go sneaking through the bottoms and see what i could find. i came around a bend and saw him strutting with 2 other toms and a hen. waited till he moved off then snuck up under a spruce tree and gave a couple yelps. he came right back into where he had been and came to investigate. walked into 15yds....
