North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries officials closed the commercial red drum fishery effective yesterday, but the April 12 proclamation by DMF Director Louis Daniel was not an end to all commercial fishing for red drum. Instead, it was but merely an early closing of the first segment of the two-part state commercial redfish season.

The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission has taken a giant step back from an earlier decision in favor of gill-net commercial fishermen. At its meeting in late March, commissioners proposed new measures that would seem to be aimed at answering a suit filed over gill nets and sea turtles.

Thrift builds lead in FLW Tour event on Lake Norman

CHARLOTTE – While the majority of the FLW Tour field struggled once again to unlock the mystery of Lake Norman’s big-bass bite, Bryan Thrift had no such trouble. Producing the largest stringer of the tournament to date – a whopping 16-pound, 9-ounce bag – Thrift cruised into the overall tournament lead by more than 2 pounds on Friday.
