Jeffrey Boykin of Wilson had a big two weeks, beginning in mid-October.

On Oct. 19, he killed a 10-point buck on his family's farm near Rock Ridge in Wilson County.

On Oct. 30, his wife gave birth to his first child.

Four days later, he was picked as the winner of North Carolina Sportsman’s October Bag-a-Buck contest.

Wildlife Federation calls for investigation
November 4, 2009
The state’s oldest private wildlife conservation organization has called on Gov. Beverly Perdue to investigate charges that appointments to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission during the Mike Easley administration were made in return for political donations totaling more than $100,000.

The N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission and N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries were put on notice Oct. 19 that state coastal saltwater netting regulations are out of compliance with federal enviromental laws and face an impending lawsuit.
The ultimate result could be a stunning ban of gill nets in all North Carolina coastal waters.

Women-Only deer hunt offered by Commission

RALEIGH – The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is looking for new or novice women hunters to participate in a special weekend getaway, complete with an overnight stay in a hunting lodge.

The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries has raised the minimum size limit on speckled trout from 12 to 14 inches. NCDMF changes speckled trout regs; NOAA closes black sea bass fishery

Fishermen heading to the coast this month will find regulations on two of their favorite fish much different.
As of Oct. 5, the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries raised the minimum size for speckled trout caught in state waters from 12 to 14 inches.
Meanwhile, federal fisheries managers closed the black sea bass fishery in federal waters (3 to 200 miles offshore) from Cape Hatteras north.

N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission downsizes, eliminates 22 jobs
September 28, 2009
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will eliminate 22 jobs on Sept. 30, 2009, in order to meet state budgetary constraints.

The Commission let seven employees go and will not fill 15 vacant positions. The state budget office said savings in salaries will total $786,008 from vacant positions and $417,248 from occupied jobs, a total of $1,203,256, according to Carol Batker, the Commission’s personnel director.
