The 99 teams fishing the April 20 Carolinas Bass Challenge N.C. Division tournament knew they would need a stringer of 20 pounds or more if they wanted to take the top prize at Falls of the Neuse Lake. For the two weeks before the tournament, 20-pound stringers were brought to the scales with startling frequency at other tournaments at the lake.

Chris Brown and Jason Thomas of Lexington won the March 23 Carolina Bass Challenge on Jordan Lake with a 5-fish limit that weighed an impressive 27.81 pounds and was worth $9,000.

Jason Wilson of Bessemer City and Kelly Logan of Morganton topped an impressive field of 168 teams and a cold, winter blast to win the Feb. 16 Carolinas Bass Challenge at Lake Norman. The two anglers had a 5-fish limit weighing 15.44 pounds to capture the first-place award of $10,000, plus a bonus of $5,000 from Skeeter.

Ken Tucker of Lincolnton and Aaron Ciucevich of Harrisburg brought two blue cats to the scales weighing 55.7 pounds to top a field of 21 teams at the Jan. 12 N.C. Catfish Association Tournament Series event at Lake Norman.

Josh Koontz and Jake Henderson of Lexington bested a field of 23 teams— composed of 41 adults, three youngsters, and one Labrador retriever — to win the Susan G. Komen Fishing for a Cure benefit striper tournament Dec. 15 on High Rock Lake.

Ernest Stephens of Orrum earned an invitation to FLW’s BFL All-American by winning the co-angler division at the Oct. 25-27 Wild Card Tournament on Alabama’s Lake Guntersville.

Stephens had 5-fish limits weighing 11-3 and 18-9, finishing with 29-12 to win by more than a pound.

Hank Cherry of Maiden has received a last-minute invitation to the 2013 Bassmaster Classic by winning the Bassmaster Southern Open on Alabama’s Lewis Smith Lake by one ounce.

Cherry’s catch of 38-13 also paid $5,690 in cash, plus a fully-rigged Nitro bass boat.

The team of Brandon Tate, Bubba Owens, Keaton Moore and Jachob Moore of Lexington set a record in the N.C. Catfish Association Tournament Series (NCCATS) by catching a 52.4-pound flathead, the largest ever caught in a series event on High Rock.

Three North Carolina pros took home some of the big prize money at the Aug. 9-12 FLW Forrest Wood Cup on Georgia’s Lake Lanier.

Bryan Thrift of Shelby led local fishermen by finishing third and banking $75,000 with a four-day haul of 52 pounds, 4 ounces. Matt Arey, also from Shelby, placed 23rd with 19-10 and won $12,500. Gastonia’s Chris Baumgardner brought 12-3 to the scales and earned $10,000.

Steve Sink of Winston-Salem captured the June 23 BFL N.C. Division tournament at High Rock Lake with a 5-fish catch weighing 21 pounds, 5 ounces.

Sink caught several of his biggest fish on a jig in 10 to 12 feet of water. For his victory, Sink collected $3,632, a $1,000 bonus from Mercury, and a $2,000 bonus from the Ranger Cup program.

Fishing by himself, James Blankenship of Lexington topped a field of 108 teams to win the Carolina Bass Challenge North Carolina Division at High Rock Lake on June 2.

Blankenship had a catch of 19.98 pounds to win a Skeeter bass boat powered by a Yamaha outboard.

Lexington’s Robert Walser overcame tough fishing conditions on High Rock Lake to win the May 12 BFL Piedmont Division tournament.

Walser’s 5-fish limit, taken with spinnerbaits and jigs from shallow water, totaled 17 pounds, 13 ounces and paid $3,156. He also earned a $2,000 bonus from the Ranger Cup program and a $1,000 bonus from Evinrude.
